University of Viena - Political Science Department
The Department of Political Science is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna and consists of 22 academic staff on established posts, 19 academic staff financed by third-party funds, 9 teaching assistants, 5 employees in the field of research administration and 5 employees in the student-services office. In addition to internal staff, a large number of external lecturers and tutors participate in scholarly activities. (April 2013)
With over 5,000 students, the department is the largest political-science teaching institute in Austria and one of the largest in Europe. The participation of international scholars and practitioners in the teaching enriches the content.
Until 2012, the political-science Diplomstudium still existed. In 2007, in accordance with the Bologna structure, the department introduced the Bachelor and Master degree in political science. In October 2009, a new curriculum was introduced for the Doctorate programme. Doctorate studies under the old plan must be completed before 2017.
The Department of Political Science is active in all major fields of political science, it develops innovative and problem-focused research areas and offers various options for specialization in the study of political science. The focus of research is on the transformation of governance, statehood and democracy in different policy areas, geographical regions and political spaces.
